SPOTLIGHT: Renee Macisco | Founder of 18th Style

At Buri and Beach, we are passionate about making a difference in the environment and the community, and we love celebrating the women who are also making a difference in other women’s lives.  We recently sat down and chatted with Renee Macisco, founder of 18th Style, a lifestyle brand focusing on style, fitness, and motherhood.  Let me just tell you, Renee is a wonder woman!  She is a single mother of three beautiful daughters, working full time while using her platform to help support women achieve their goals and promote collective empowerment.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Southport?
I am originally from the Black Rock neighborhood in Bridgeport, CT (a neighboring city to Fairfield proper).  I now live in Southport and have been here for six years.  I was living in New York for a few years prior and then Southern California and Boston before that.

What is 18th Style?
18th Style is a lifestyle brand focusing on everyday life, style, fitness, and being a full-time working mom.

What is your brand’s mission?
To inspire and empower women and girls. To support each other.  I want my kids and all girls to know that friendships with women are so important, and even more important than we realize when we are younger.  I think it takes years for women to realize how important we really are to each other. The unfortunate truth is women are incredibly competitive with one another.  I’ve always believed that we are truly stronger together.  I am blessed to be surrounded by women who are loyal, beautiful, intelligent and strong.

Who inspires you?
I don’t think any one person inspires me, I think it’s a collection of people. My girlfriends inspire me.  My kids inspire me.  Public figures that inspire me: Oprah, Joanna Gaines and all that they have accomplished.

How do you inspire other women?
I hope that I inspire women by being me.  I don’t compete with other women.  I want them standing beside me.  Collective empowerment is far more meaningful than individual achievement!

When do you feel the most empowered?
I believe there are many things that empower me.  Helping and supporting other women empowers me. Listening and talking with my daughters’ friends about their future and how they can accomplish anything empowers me.  Helping girlfriends grow their visions, passions and helping other women feel confident with style empowers me.

You’re raising three beautiful girls.  How do you balance motherhood?
Thank you for asking, it’s certainly not easy.  I’ve always been a full-time working mom.  And I’ve been a single, full-time working mom now for the past six years and as you can imagine, it’s challenging.  I just manage my time well.  You have to when you’re managing your own schedule plus three other human beings that rely on you to be there for them.  Yes, it does take a lot of sacrifices, and it’s not always fun.  I just have to remember to never forget about me and constantly remind myself that it’s OK to have some me time.  We all need to take time for ourselves, kids or not!

What’s the most important lesson you’re teaching your daughters?
To be kind.  And always remember that character and integrity are defined by what you do when no one is watching.

Who is your greatest style influencer?
I love Jennifer Garner, her look is classic and timeless.  Joanna Gaines (HGTV, Fixer Upper) with her everyday laid-back look, and Kate Middleton, Maria Menuous.  I just love their classic, elegant, and chic style.

How would you describe your style?
Comfortable. Classic. Timeless.

What’s the future of 18th Style?
There are so many projects that I have on my list.  I hope to collaborate with my favorite brands on projects to support and empower women.  I have a clothing line idea for girls.  Expand 18th Style Woman of the Month and turn it into a mouthpiece for a publication like The Huffington Post.  I have a book idea…the ideas are limitless.  The ultimate goal is to work on 18th Style full-time.

If you could pick any superpower, what would it be?
What a great question!  I would clone myself so I could be there for all three of my girls when they need me.  Being a single mom and dividing time between the three of them is difficult on all of us, and I wish I could give them more.

3 words that describe each of you.
Passionate. Loyal. Determined.
